Trip to the Course at Sewanee with friends

On Wednesday, November 4th, 8 of us went to Monteagle Mtn. to play the Gil Hanse recently renovated 9 hole course at Sewanee. Hanse also designed the new Olympic course in Rio, so it was a treat to see some of his work. Those that went were, Doug Jones, Joe Conard, Dan Foland, Bill Livingston, Dave Wilder, Dave Rankin, Jim Meredith and myself, Joe Hall. Something strange and great happened on this trip. First of all, at breakfast at the Smokehouse restaurant on top of the mountain a conversation started as to how many hole-in-ones we had as a group. The alarming number was 16 total from the 8 of us. At that, someone (not going to mention who, but the initials are JC) suggested that if anyone in our group made a hole-in-one in the future we would all pay $50 to the person making the hole-in-one. so after breakfast we head to the course with a 10am tee time. Of the 8 guys playing only 2 of us had played the beautiful course, and of course we had some wagers going on. Below the photos, as Paul Harvey said, is “the rest of the story”

You guessed it, Dave Rankin from Old Hickory shot the round of his life (so far) on Wednesday November 4th. Dave had 6 birdies and one hole-in-one on the 12th hole that played 141 yards using a 7 iron. The ace was witnessed by Jim Meredith, Dan Foland, and Dave Wilder. Dave carded a 68 and walked away with $350, but was very benevolent and made some refreshment donations to the group.

Thanks to Matt Daniels head Pro at the Course at Sewanee and his staff for their accommodations, and the nice comfortable ride providedby Joe Conard. 20150913_190203_resized

Here are a couple testimonals:

From:  Lou Ullrich, Nashville TN

In 2008, my brother-in-law, Bob Taylor, and his friend, Todd Hilbert, got together and decided we needed to have a group that went on an annual golf trip.

Plans were made and the Father’s Day Golf Association, a group of eight that first year, went to Fairfield Glade.  Our criteria for selection of a location were: drive time – less than six hours; reasonable rate, accommodations – cabin/lodge type accommodations, and readily accessible food and great golf.  The first year we went to Fairfield Glade.  It filled the bill and had multiple golf courses.  In following years we went to Huntsville, the RTJ trail; Gold Strike at Tunica, Chateau Elan in Georgia, and in 2013 we went to Springdale in Canton, NC.  While all of the other locations were good and had great golf, none of them really were able to provide the experience that we had at Springdale.

Springdale has a single 18-hole golf course that is in excellent condition with beautiful mountain views that is both challenging and fun.   The accommodations are wonderful and the home-cooked, family-style meals are beyond compare.  One of the best things that we liked about Springdale was the unlimited golf that it provided.  In three days, we would play five rounds of golf and after the evening meal, we would go back out to one of the greens and have putting contests or find a par 3 and play closest to the Hole until we lost all of the light.  The staff at Springdale treats you like you are part of their family which is wonderful since Springdale is family-owned and operated.  If you have a group that is looking for a great, affordable golf experience, you have to try Springdale.

By the way, when the Father’s Day Golf Association started, we wanted to new places every year.  However, Springdale has changed our minds – we like it so much we plan to return there every other year!
